What is autism?
Autism is a neurobiological brain disorder that often makes it hard to communicate with and relate to others. With autism, the different areas of the brain fail to work together. The core deficit of autism is impaired social interactions. Other key components include:
  • Problems with verbal and non verbal communication; lack of speech / language delays
  • Repetitive or obsessive behaviors
  • Sensory processing challenges
Please keep in mind that Autism is a spectrum disorder (or ASD) so no two children with autism will be completely alike. Autistic disorder, sometimes called autism or classical ASD, is the most severe form of ASD, while other conditions along the spectrum include a milder form known as Asperger syndrome, the rare condition called Rett syndrome, and childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). Although ASD varies significantly in character and severity, it occurs in all ethnic and socioeconomic groups and affects every age group Autism affects 1 out of every 150 kids born today!! Also by equipping those around our children with simple understanding of autism's most basic elements has a tremendous impact on their ability to journey towards productive, independent adulthood. Children with autism can improve with age and grow up to lead near normal lives.
